Hay Market Chapter #123 OES Installation

Posted in Blog on March 16th, 2014 by Webmaster

When my Mom was driving we saw the building after we passed it. We had to turn around and go back. Mom and I helped Worthy Matron-Elect, Vallery, with the all the things she had to carry in for the Installation. After we helped her sit that stuff down, I helped put the decorations out. Then when I came to the kitchen, she had to show my Mom and I all the stuff we might need to help get the food out for the reception. I washed lots of serving spoons and dishes so we could use them.

The Installation was different from Rainbow and they had a lot of chairs (17) because they had a lot of people they were going to install. When Vallery had been installed she said that she was focusing on youth that is why her colors were all of the rainbows colors. Mom Janae sang several songs beautifully during the Installation. Worthy Matron Vallery was presented with her daughter’s (Danielle, Past Honored Queen, Past Worthy Advisor)  gavel that had all the Rainbow ribbons on it by her son, (Nick, Past Master Counselor) .  Both Mallory and I were introduced to the group and represented Ashburn Assembly #11.

After we were introduced, we left with Mom to help set up for the reception. Mallory and I made tea and lemonade and unwrapped all the food. Mallory cut the cake and I gave it to the ladies. We helped take food to the tables while Mom made coffee. We made sure all the food was put out and made sure it was kept full. There was a lot of food.

Before leaving, Worthy Matron Vallery gave Mallory and I a box which contained four angels. Mallory got two and I got two so it would be fair. I am looking forward to helping them out next time.

Dinner Service leads to Dinner for a Family

Posted in Blog on March 16th, 2014 by Webmaster

On November 21st, Smithfield Assembly served dinner at the American Legion for their Museum. The members come together from across the area and then visited the War Museum in Newport News. When we arrived, everyone was socializing for a few minutes. We all put on aprons and served plates of food to about 35 people. After they finished eating, cleared the tables, and cleaned up the area. The American Legion made a generous donation to our Assembly for all of our hard work.

When we left, we went to Wal-Mart to purchase food for our service project. We put together a food basket for the less fortunate. We bought a whole meal for a family that would not have had one. It was a great night and we really enjoy doing for others.

It made us feel great doing something for others!

Dreams Come True

Posted in Blog on January 27th, 2014 by Webmaster

My term as Worthy Advisor started in July of 2013. My theme was ‘Dreams’ and my charity was Operation Smile.

Operation Smile provides surgeries to kids born with a Cleft Lip/Palate birth defect, which is a split in the upper lip and roof of the mouth. Unfortunately, some families can’t afford the surgery for their child, and without the surgery, 1 in 3 kids will die before their first birthday or find it difficult to talk, eat, and socialize. This charity was really important to me because I was born with a Cleft Lip and I got my surgery from Operation Smile when I was only a few months old.

To kids who receive their surgery, Operation Smile is a dream come true. So, during my term, I had a lot of different kinds of fundraisers like carwashes, carnivals, face painting, and dinners. I also received donations from people and groups and the Phoebus community merchants even helped by collecting change from their customers. My goal was to raise $1,500, enough to pay for six kids whose families aren’t as fortunate enough to be able to afford the surgery.

After all the hard work with the help of the girls of Hampton Assembly No. 2, the fundraisers (just about every other weekend) and help from my sister who raised $528.97 during her term, I managed to not only meet my goal but exceed it. I invited representatives from Operation Smile to an open meeting on January 19, 2014 and presented them with a $2,750 check. They were very grateful and told me that was enough to pay for over ten (10) surgeries.

Weekend full of Service!

Posted in Blog on October 29th, 2013 by Webmaster

On Saturday morning, I woke up really early to go make sandwiches for the homeless. After making those sandwiches, we drove to the homeless shelter to hand them out along with clothes. I remember this really nice man with a hopeful spirit, who was only wearing a short-sleeved jersey. I thought it was very kind when a member of Hampton Assembly, Kensley, went to her car and grabbed her old jacket and ran down the street to give it to the man. On Sunday, Kensley and I went to Hampton University for the P.A.B. 1,000 Youth March Against Bullying. It was neat to see all those people show up. They had kids singing, tumbling, and dancing. And the mom who started ‘Parents Against Bullying’ had a very moving story about why she created the organization and her daughters that were bullied in middle school. They also had a guest speaker who was the aunt of the kid who got killed at the Carnival at the Hampton Coliseum a few months back; She said since he can no longer speak out against bullying, she is his voice.
