Down By the Water

On June 14th, few girls from Hampton Assembly and I volunteered to help with Monitor Lodge’s Child ID Program at a church’s event Down By the Water. Not only did we help with the Child ID when needed, we managed some of the game stations they had. They had a big bounce house and a dunk tank which you could volunteer anyone to get in. It was a fun and very hot day, but I enjoyed the sun, the games, and having a good time with my Rainbow sisters!

A Day in our Nation’s Capitol

Posted in Blog on March 18th, 2014 by Webmaster
On Saturday, February 22, the Rainbow Girls of Virginia all gathered at the Arlington Cemetery to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It was a long drive from Hampton to Arlington, but it was definitely worth it. Our Grand Worthy Advisor, Katie,  had the opportunity to lay a red, white, and blue wreath at the Tomb. On the wreath was a ribbon that said “The Order of The Rainbow for Girls”.  It was really amazing to see the unique ways we are getting our name out their and the good we are doing while advertising our organization. While we were there, we also got to see the ceremony of the changing of the guards. It was also very interesting to see and was just an amazing experience overall.
After the cemetery, we took the Metro to the Smithsonian. That was an adventure in itself; getting tickets, staying together, and getting off at the right stop was fun, but we all got there safe.
When we got to the Museum of American History, we split into groups to do a scavenger hunt. We had to find information about the different topics that were in the museum. In the museum there was a section on how technology has evolved, one on each of the world wars, and more. It was great to learn about our Country and some of the people who protect it.
By the end of the day, everyone was tired, happy, and ready to go home. It was an amazing opportunity to be able to see the things we did that weekend and get close as a State. We cannot wait for the next opportunity to do so!

Out, about, and around the sea!

Posted in Blog on February 3rd, 2014 by Webmaster

On January 26th, 2014, Hampton Assembly #2 had their Installation of Officers. Maddy was installed as Worthy Adviser for this term. Her mascot is a dolphin, which went with her theme of “Out, About, and Around the Sea.” The dining hall was decked out in light blue and aqua green. Her Installing Officer was Danielle, who is a Past Worthy Advisor of Hampton Assembly. She was the person who introduced Rainbow to Maddy, so it was extra special. During her Silver Collection, she raised over $160 for her charity, Wounded Warriors. After the Installation, we headed downstairs for refreshments. A few minutes later, Samantha and Libbie appeared with her mascot, to get it back, Maddy had to earn $15 in change and sing “What Does the Dolphin Say?” She earned a total of over $180 for Wounded Warriors to go toward her goal of $1,500. The Installation was quite enjoyable and everyone is proud of her.

Dreams Come True

Posted in Blog on January 27th, 2014 by Webmaster

My term as Worthy Advisor started in July of 2013. My theme was ‘Dreams’ and my charity was Operation Smile.

Operation Smile provides surgeries to kids born with a Cleft Lip/Palate birth defect, which is a split in the upper lip and roof of the mouth. Unfortunately, some families can’t afford the surgery for their child, and without the surgery, 1 in 3 kids will die before their first birthday or find it difficult to talk, eat, and socialize. This charity was really important to me because I was born with a Cleft Lip and I got my surgery from Operation Smile when I was only a few months old.

To kids who receive their surgery, Operation Smile is a dream come true. So, during my term, I had a lot of different kinds of fundraisers like carwashes, carnivals, face painting, and dinners. I also received donations from people and groups and the Phoebus community merchants even helped by collecting change from their customers. My goal was to raise $1,500, enough to pay for six kids whose families aren’t as fortunate enough to be able to afford the surgery.

After all the hard work with the help of the girls of Hampton Assembly No. 2, the fundraisers (just about every other weekend) and help from my sister who raised $528.97 during her term, I managed to not only meet my goal but exceed it. I invited representatives from Operation Smile to an open meeting on January 19, 2014 and presented them with a $2,750 check. They were very grateful and told me that was enough to pay for over ten (10) surgeries.
